Top 3 Questions Military Service Members ask when considering DSDT

In response to these genuine and yet often confusing areas of concern, the following is a brief explanation of possible Basic Housing Allowance (BAH) rates, the differences between G.I. Bills and, if eligible, how a DSDT Certifying Official can assist with applying for educational benefits.

Outlined in the following diagram are the current possible BAH rates for military ranks E1 thru E6, those with dependents and those without. The possible benefit payments are based upon DSDT being in the Detroit zip code 48216. As BAH benefits are paid directly to military students, those eligible can expect to receive an initial payment beginning the first month after receiving approval and for the duration of their subsequent enrollment.

To receive BAH benefits, applying military servicemen must be eligible under the Post-9/11 GI Bill. Eligible individuals include those who serve on active duty at least 90 aggregate days beginning on or after September 11, 2001, or individuals discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days of continuous service. (Discharged individuals must have received an honorable discharge to be eligible, or have a discharge or release for a medical condition Existing Prior to Service (EPTS), Hardship (HDSP), or Condition Interfering with Duty (CIWD).

The Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB) assists active duty Service members and Reservists in pursuing higher education degrees, certificates, and other education and training. MGIB supports those who enlist in the U.S. armed forces through two main programs:

  1. Montgomery GI Bill Active Duty – Also known as Chapter 30, this program provides education benefits to Veterans and Service members who have completed at least two years of active duty service. Active duty personnel who enroll and pay $100 per month for 12 months are eligible for a monthly education benefit once they have completed a minimum service obligation.

  2. Montgomery GI Bill Selected Reserve – Reservists with a six-year obligation in the Selected Reserve who are actively drilling may receive 36 months of education benefits.
